The Cubs finally have to deal with injuries that most other teams have to deal with every season. One of the biggest reasons for the Cub's success the last two regular seasons, other than their huge payroll has been their luck with injuries. While all of the other teams were missing key players the Cubs went two seasons with very few problems. Their pitching staff was remarkably healthy. The Cardinals missed their ace, Carpenter for the whole season and their number 2, Waignwright for about half the season. It is hard to imagine the Cubs winning so many games last season if Zambrano had missed the season and Lilly had missed a lot of starts.
The Cubs injuries are on pair with most teams but to hear Piniella and the fans you would think that the baseball gods are out to get them. I guess they want a huge payroll advantage and better luck with injuries. Zambrano's trip to the DL does hurt, but it is only three weeks or so and it could be a blessing in disguise. Zambrano has been overworked the last several seasons and the rest may help him stay strong at the end of the season. Ramirez missing 4-6 weeks will definitely hurt. Ramirez is the only true power threat in the Cub's lineup. But other teams like the Cardinals also are suffering from the same problems. Carpenter has missed most of the season and Glaus has yet to see action.
The Cubs have been suffering from some big injuries but their whining has been pathetic.
